A prisoner died at hospital one day after being injured in an altercation with prison officers.
In a media release , the T&T Prison Service confirmed that Akino Purcell died at the Arima General Hospital on Saturday morning.
The release stated that Purcell was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC) on Friday after he attacked a group of prison officers at the Maximum Security Prison and they responded with “lawful force”.
He was discharged after receiving initial treatment and was taken to the prison’s infirmary for observation.
He reportedly collapsed in the infirmary and was taken to the Arima hospital where he died.
The release said that an investigation was being conducted with the involvement of police officers.
“This investigation will include a review of the initial medical report from EWMSC and the death medical report from the Arima General Hospital,” it said.
“The Commissioner of Prisons extends sincere condolences to the mother, family and friends of Akim Purcell and gives the assurance that a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the precise cause of death and to understand all contributing factors has already commenced and will continue,”it added.
