Tobago police have launched an investigation into the sudden death of 41-year-old Iyana Castanada, of Chase Village, after foul play was suspected.
Guardian Media was told doctors referred the matter to the police following initial medical assessments.
Police sources said yesterday it is now being treated as a forensic case. While the exact circumstances that raised suspicion remain unclear, a forensic autopsy has been recommended to determine the true cause of death.
Police said Castanada died at Top Hill, Mason Hall, Tobago on Friday night shortly after drinking a cup of moringa tea.
There were reports that a 36-year-old male friend told officers that around 11.30 pm, Castanada complained of severe belly pains and collapsed after consuming tea. She died shortly after.
However, a woman close to Castanada shared a different version of events with the police. She said Castanada had spent the day cooking and, without cooling off, went to bathe in an outdoor pool while liming. She later complained of feeling unwell and was possibly given the tea to help with shivering.
A District Medical Officer visited the scene and ordered the body removed to the Scarborough Mortuary around 2 am on Saturday.
Investigations are ongoing.
