The People’s National Movement (PNM) has called for prospective candidates to come forward to contest by-elections in the electoral districts of Morne Diablo/Quinam and Lengua/Indian Walk which fall under the Princes Town Regional Corporation.
Extending the invitation as the formal process was opened yesterday, the party advised that the nomination period will run from May 9 to 15.
Indicating screening would begin shortly thereafter, for the nominees for the two electoral districts, the PNM said it, “Takes the business of the governance of Trinidad and Tobago and our country’s democracy very seriously.
It added, “The PNM is committed to participating in every election, and is the only political institution that has fielded a candidate in every constituency for General Election, candidates in every electoral district for Local Government Election, and candidates for every Tobago House of Assembly Election.”
Earlier this year, the Appeal Court dismissed a petition by the United National Congress to block a by-election in Lengua/Indian Walk.
The party had contended that a ballot which would have given its local government candidate the win in the August 2023 polls was invalidated because of the returning officer's failure to initial it.
The second by-election for Morne Diablo/Quinam was deemed necessary following the death of PDRC chairman Diptee Ramnath in December last year. He was the councillor for that district.
A date for the two by-elections is yet to be announced.
