Revellers from Arima, Arouca and Valencia headed to Sangre Grande yesterday to kick off their Carnival Monday celebrations.
Thousands lined the pavements and streets of Sangre Grande from as early as 3.30 am, as they waited for the 4 am official start to J’Ouvert.
DJs on trucks provided the music as masqueraders and spectators danced away.
The revellers stayed away from mud and were seen bathed in coloured paint and powder.
Police estimated the crowd to be around 10,000 to 12,000 people.
Head of the Eastern Division, Snr Supt Christopher Pacheco and Inspector Aliister Kistow, who was in charge of Carnival celebrations in the district, and officers kept a watchful eye on the festivities and reported an incident-free and safe J’Ouvert.
