Homicide detectives are yet to detain anyone in the suspected killing of 65-year-old Merril Sabessar, as they await the results of a post-mortem examination.
Sabessar’s body was discovered inside her ransacked home along Papourie Road, Barrackpore, on Sunday afternoon.
Police said officers received a report around 1.50 pm that a body had been found at the address and proceeded to the scene.
Investigators were told that a relative became concerned after repeated attempts to contact Sabessar by cellphone were unsuccessful.
The relative asked her husband to check on Sabessar, and when he went to the house, he observed that Sabessar’s vehicle, a white Nissan Tiida, was missing from the yard.
He also noticed that the front door was open and the house appeared to have been ransacked.
The man later discovered that a bedroom on the south-eastern side of the house was locked. With assistance from another relative, he forced open the door and found Sabessar lying motionless on the floor.
He then left the house and contacted the police.
When officers arrived, they were escorted to the bedroom where Sabessar’s body was found lying on her back on the floor.
It was clad in a pink jersey and red Christmas-themed pyjama pants and was barefoot. Police observed a small pool of what appeared to be blood beneath her right wrist.
District Medical Officer Dr Balkissoon visited the scene, viewed the body, and pronounced her dead.
He ordered that the body be removed pending a post-mortem examination at the Forensic Science Centre.
Crime Scene Investigators from the Southern Division photographed and processed the scene, but no workable fingerprints were found.
CSI officers from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations: Region Three also collected several pieces of evidence, including a swab of blood, a silver wristband and a pair of gold-coloured hoop earrings.
Police said officers identified several cameras in the area and retrieved footage as part of their investigation.
When Guardian Media visited the home yesterday, no one was present.
