A four-vehicle collision on Tuesday night in South Oropouche left five people injured, including four drivers and a passenger. The incident occurred just before 7 pm along the highway near the Oropouche Flyover.
According to police reports, the chain of events began when a police officer parked his car on the side of the road near the Oropouche turn-off to assist a relative whose vehicle, a Nissan B15, had stalled.
The officer’s relative, who is physically challenged, remained in the car while help was provided. Shortly after, a motorist driving a silver Mitsubishi L200 pulled over to offer assistance. Once the repairs were completed, both drivers were returning to their vehicles when a Kia K2700 struck the rear of the Mitsubishi L200. The impact caused the Kia to flip onto its right side and it ended up blocking both lanes of the highway.
Within seconds, a white Honda Vezel, proceeding towards Point Fortin crashed into the overturned Kia. The Honda landed on its hood.
The drivers, along with a back-seat passenger in the Mitsubishi L200, sustained injuries. They were taken by Emergency Health Services (EHS) ambulances to the San Fernando General Hospital for medical attention.
The damaged vehicles were towed to the Oropouche Police Station pending further investigations.
