A 28-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of businessman Zaheer Esat.
Esat, 46, was taken at gunpoint from a vehicle at Warren Road, Cunupia, around 1.50 pm on April 4 and was found wandering near the Caroni Cremation Site around 8.15 pm on April 6.
He was taken by a passer-by to the Caroni Police Station, where he told officers he had escaped by jumping out of a car trunk while being moved from the location where he had been held after being abducted.
The UK-based businessman is the owner of a private school for troubled youth in Leicestershire, UK.
Confirming the arrest during yesterday’s media briefing at the Police Administration Building, Port-of-Spain, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Richard Smith, said the victim was taken for medical attention after he was handed over to officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit.
Esat, who is visiting Trinidad with relatives, was kidnapped after two cars blocked the vehicle he was travelling in and gunmen grabbed him from the back seat. —Anna-Lisa Paul
