Police and fire officers are investigating a house fire in New Grant in which a 40-year-old man died last evening.
The charred remains found in the rubble are believed to be those of Amarnath Ramnarinesingh, a mechanic of Frederick Settlement, Hindustan.
Police said Ramnarinesingh, who lived with his 48-year-old common-law wife, was a psychiatric patient of Ward One at the San Fernando General Hospital for eight years.
The woman told officers that fifteen minutes before the fire, he had threatened to burn down the house. She was downstairs baking around 6 p.m. when she smelt smoke and then saw it coming from the back of the house.
She investigated and saw the area engulfed in flames.
She contacted the Fire Services and police. By the time firefighters arrived, the two-storey wooden and concrete house was already ablaze. When they extinguished the flames, officers found charred skeletal remains in the downstairs area near the front step.
The woman’s white Nissan Y12 Wingroad was also destroyed. The remains were taken to the San Fernando Mortuary for a post-mortem.
