An Or­ange Lev­el Haz­ardous Seas Alert was is­sued by the T&T Me­te­o­ro­log­i­cal Ser­vice (TTMS) yes­ter­day, ex­tend­ing un­til 8 am to­mor­row. The alert is in ef­fect for all north and east­ern-fac­ing coast­lines of T&T, which in­cludes most of the pop­u­lar beach­es.

The main im­pact is ex­pect­ed to be large break­ing waves along near-shore coastal ar­eas, which can af­fect fish­ing, swim­ming and boat moor­ings.

Ac­cord­ing to the TTMS, ad­di­tion­al im­pacts may in­clude the in­tru­sion of salt wa­ter and the dis­place­ment of sand as waves may reach far­ther in­land than usu­al. These im­pacts are ex­pect­ed to be ex­ac­er­bat­ed at high tide times.

The TTMS ad­vised ma­rine in­ter­ests to ex­er­cise ex­treme cau­tion when con­duct­ing nearshore ac­tiv­i­ties and se­cure coastal prop­er­ty (such as boats) if nec­es­sary.

This is on­ly the sec­ond Or­ange Lev­el Haz­ardous Seas Alert is­sued by the TTMS (the first was is­sued in De­cem­ber 2022) since the im­ple­men­ta­tion of the colour-cod­ed Ear­ly Warn­ing Sys­tem.
