In response to the recent collapse of two high-profile court cases involving police officers, Commissioner of Police Erla Harewood-Christopher has confirmed that disciplinary action is already underway.
“Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against three officers in connection with the first case involving seven officers,” said Commissioner Harewood-Christopher. “The inquiry is ongoing and will fully examine any potential breaches of established policies and procedures to determine if there has been any misconduct or negligence.”
On November 18, 2024, seven officers were discharged after facing charges of misbehaviour in public office. Just days later, on November 20, another case involving five officers on similar charges was dismissed.
In light of these developments, the Commissioner promptly ordered an internal investigation into the handling of these cases.
“The TTPS recognizes the serious nature of these matters,” the Commissioner continued. “As such, we are committed to ensuring that these issues are addressed in accordance with the full extent of the law.”
The Commissioner emphasized that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has been engaged to determine the next steps in these cases. “I want to reassure the public that any officer found to have engaged in misconduct or failed to meet the required standards will be held accountable,” she stated.
Commissioner Harewood-Christopher reaffirmed her administration’s dedication to transparency, fairness, and the rule of law.
“We maintain a zero-tolerance policy on errant behaviour within the TTPS,” she stated. “Any officer whose conduct fails to meet the required standards will face the full brunt of the law.”
The Police Commissioner concluded her statement by expressing confidence that the investigation will reach a swift conclusion, restoring public trust in the law enforcement system.
“We will continue to keep the public updated as the investigation progresses,” she said.
