Chaguanas Mayor Faaiq Mohammed has announced measures to address vending and security concerns during the busy Christmas shopping season.
With heightened activity expected in key shopping areas, the mayor emphasised the importance of balancing security needs with the demands of street vendors.
Mohammed revealed plans for a stronger police presence along major shopping areas on the outskirts of the major shopping hub parallel to the highway, which hosts numerous malls and flea markets.
“We are collaborating with the T&T Police Service (TTPS) and municipal police to ensure a visible and robust presence,” he said. “This will help deter crime and ensure public safety.”
To bolster security, resources will be reallocated to patrol the streets rather than managing street vending.
“Our limited resources must focus on combating crime and criminality,” the mayor stated.
A significant traffic adjustment is planned for Chaguanas Main Road. One lane will be temporarily closed to facilitate vending activities and reduce congestion.
“This measure aims to ensure safety for both vendors and shoppers,” he explained, adding that enforcement officers will monitor compliance.
Attempts to relocate vendors to designated areas such as Saith Park have met resistance.
According to Mayor Mohammed, vendors prefer operating along the main shopping hubs.
“They argue that moving them away from these areas impacts their sales,” he said. “It’s a give-and-take situation, and we’re working toward the best possible outcome.”
The mayor also addressed complaints from vendors about theft of goods left overnight in the market. He reminded vendors that under market bylaws, they were required to remove their goods daily.
“It’s difficult, but it’s the law,” he stressed.
“I’ve encouraged them to explore secure storage options, as the watchmen can only do so much.”
The mayor has held several meetings with the vending committee to discuss solutions. While he acknowledged the challenges vendors face in transporting goods daily, he emphasised the importance of adhering to the bylaws to avoid losses.
