A series of anti-crime exercises conducted across the North Eastern, Central, and Port-of-Spain Divisions led to the arrest of six people and the seizure of three firearms, Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) confirmed on Monday.
The operations, which were supported by the T&T Defence Force, targeted criminal activities under the ongoing State of Emergency regulations.
In Malick, officers from the Morvant Criminal Investigations Department (CID), North Eastern Division Task Force and NED Gang and Intelligence Unit responded to a report of gunfire on Sunday between 7.30 pm and 11.30 pm. At the scene, a black Suzuki Swift, abandoned on the roadway, was searched. Officers found a Glock pistol with a magazine containing six rounds of ammunition and one spent shell. Further investigations revealed the vehicle bore false registration plates and had been reported stolen in the Central Division in December.
Meanwhile, in the Central Division, Area South Task Force officers conducted operations in the Couva and Freeport districts. During an exercise at Siewdass Road, a gold Nissan Tiida was stopped and searched. Officers recovered another pistol, loaded with six rounds of ammunition. The three occupants of the vehicle—two men, aged 20 and 33, and a woman, aged 27—were taken into custody.
In a separate operation early Monday, TTPS personnel conducted “Operation Blast” in Sea Lots, Port-of-Spain Division. This exercise saw the arrest of three individuals and the recovery of a pistol loaded with 12 rounds of ammunition from a drawer that also contained a copy of the Bible.
Commenting on the successful operations, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Collis Hazel, of Tactical Support, said, “The criminal elements may be praying to avoid justice, but our prayers are stronger. Backed by determined police work, we are resolute in our mission to ensure safety for the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.”
The TTPS emphasised its commitment to fighting crime and urged citizens to remain vigilant.
Investigations into the incidents are ongoing.
