Recycling wood into art has become a way of life for woodturner Evan Samuel.
On May 2 and 3, his pieces will be on display at Samuel’s Yard Woodturning Art Gallery, at 4 Lawrence Wong Road, Longdenville, from 10 am to 5 pm.
“What I do is unique in Trinidad and Tobago. There are many woodturners who make functional pieces like rolling pins, mortars and pestles, they turn balusters, but I have gone beyond that, and I am making decorative, artistic pieces out of wood … There is a line that separates woodcraft from wood art,” he explained, and described his work as an advanced level of woodturning.
The theme of the exhibit is Come and See, and he said patrons will also be allowed to touch the pieces.
“The ambience and the way how people operate is different to a painting gallery. It’s not art on the wall that you just have to stand up and look. You interact with the pieces and get a feel of the wood they are made from.”
There is no entrance fee and there will be secure parking.
