Architect Brian Lewis is staging his final photographic exhibition, Last Light, at Medulla Art Gallery.
The exhibition features a collection of black and white architectural photographs and marks the culmination of a lifelong passion for architecture and photography, and runs until July 25.
Lewis practised architecture for more than five decades, starting after his return from studying in London.
He joined ACLA, the firm founded by his father, Anthony C Lewis. Over his career, Brian worked on some of the country’s most notable buildings, including the Eric Williams Financial Complex, the Hall of Justice, the original Gulf City Complex and the British Gas Building on St Clair Avenue.
Lewis’s interest in photography dates back to his teenage years, but it was only after retiring from architectural practice in 2016 that he devoted himself to architectural photography. He is largely self-taught, developing his craft through books and attending seminars abroad.
Initially, his photography was used to promote ACLA’s architectural portfolio; however, over the years, he has published several books recording the Caribbean’s built environment: Contemporary Caribbean Architecture, Port-of-Spain: An Architectural Record, Manikin: The Art & Architecture of Anthony C Lewis, and Manifestations of Faith: Preservations of Churches and Chapels. His images have also appeared in international magazines and publications.
In Last Light, the photographs are all black and white, and it is an exhibition Lewis hopes will give viewers a deeper appreciation of architecture.
“In my twilight years, I felt I should continue to share my love for architecture, for what it’s worth,” Lewis said.
“Black and white is the natural language for this work - the absence of colour is widely agreed among architectural photographers to sharpen the viewer’s understanding and appreciation of architecture, stripping away the incidental to reveal form, shadow and light.”
Lewis will speak about his career and answer questions about the exhibition at his Artist’s Talk on July 18 at Medulla from 4pm.
Last Light can be viewed at Medulla Gallery, 37 Fitt Street, Woodbrook, until July 25. The gallery’s opening hours are 10am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 11am to 2pm on Saturdays.
