It’s a news story we see too often: A person meets up with another for the sale of an item advertised online and gets scammed or robbed. But one local businessman rose to the challenge. Quincy Richards has now launched Bamboo Marketplace, an online platform that ensures safe financial transactions and a secure collection-based system.
Richards, 32, is a business accounts executive from Point Fortin. He told WE that the idea stemmed from a potential purchase in 2024 that could have gone downhill.
“I would have gone to sell one of my phones that I was getting rid of, and (the buyer) tried to fabricate a digital bank transfer receipt,” he recalled. “The (confirmation) text was not sending to me and he kept trying and I kind of analysed the situation and realised what was happening.”
He later contacted the relevant bank to find out if all the excuses the buyer had given him were possible and for clarity on how its system works. The buyer, they said, was dishonest about everything.
“It was at that moment I thought, ‘Why don’t we have something like that here in T&T where, if I want to buy or sell something, I don’t need to meet up or show up with cash and put my life at risk?” He drew similarities in his vision with global marketplaces like Amazon and eBay. “And there’s where it started and began conceptualising it.”
The website, bamboocaribbean.com, allows users to sign up either as a buyer or seller, and primarily focuses on the sale of cellphones, laptops, tablets, cameras, gaming consoles, etc. It was built by a team including web and software developers and other business partners.
And while there are plans to expand the current offerings on the site, he explained, “We chose electronics because they all have a serial number, and with that information, we can ensure the item being sold is not stolen or blacklisted. So it’s a good option to start, but we will introduce others gradually.”
Photos of the products are uploaded, along with a description, and sellers include unique codes to confirm the products’ authenticity to become “Bamboo verified.”
And for delivery, the platform uses a smart locker pickup system for collection, powered by Aeropost, at various Massy Stores, Unipet and Aeropost compounds across the country. Each delivery/locker will also have a unique code, so the seller does not have to meet up with the buyer.
Payments are made online and all local bank cards can be used.
Richards ensured that the team made safety its top priority and explained some additional security measures implemented.
For instance, there are certain keywords that are restricted to use when sending messages on the platform that will be flagged like “meet up” or anything alluding to arrangements being made outside of the dedicated collection system.
“We covered every version, dialect variation, acronym, etc suggesting meetups because you know people can get so innovative (to scam),” he said. “But on both sides of all transactions, there’s heavy vetting; to be a seller, you have the biometric verification and then you still have to verify the device that’s being sold.”
The team eventually hopes to expand across the region and has plans to launch a mobile application.
And yes, just like international marketplaces, this will also host Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales/deals and more.
